How I have grown what I have learned

Since my first day at Iowa State I have grown a lot. Before coming here I was pretty Independent already but I have become even more so. Now that I am here I do my own laundry, and I fold… most of it. I take care of all my problems; I pay my own bills over the phone and on line. I make appointments for physical therapy and the doctor when I am sick and I contacted teachers when I need help. I have learned, or I have gotten better at balancing fun with study time; I still need to figure out a way to work a job into my schedule.

I have also learned a lot too, sometimes I think it’s too much good thing I only have three and a half years left.

·        Ask questions, even if you look “dumb” at least you will know
·        At first carry a map
·        Get important phone numbers
·        Don’t be afraid to call your advisor
·        Put a little thought into your future everyday so you don’t have to do it all at once
·        Don’t be afraid to take a class that’s not required
·        Walk all the way around the UDCC before deciding what you are going to eat
·        In Chem. Class proffessors never use the real numbers… they always round them
·        Don’t get on busses just to see where they go, your adventure will take you past where you want to go
·        Leave your door open when your there, you will meet a lot more people
·        Have fun!
·        Study!!

What the Hixson Award means to me

The Hixson Scholarship means great deal to me. Without this scholarship it is very possible that I would not be attending Iowa State. The money that I have received allows me to focus on school work and my grades instead of worrying about financial troubles. If I had to work a job I would have very little time for sleeping and school work.
The scholarship will also help me get a job when I graduate from college. When employers see that I am a Hixson Scholar they will know that I am a hardworking and talented individual. To me the job I get is very important. I will obviously need money to function in today’s world, but it is very important that I enjoy my work and believe that it will make a difference in our world.
The last major thing the Hixson Program does that is important to me it the fact that I will have a Lot less debt when I am done with school. I will be able to pay my loans back sooner. This means that I will be able to start saving money for my future family and for a business that I would like to start.
The Hixson Program has done and will continue to do a lot for me.
